Sony Ericsson to go all smartphone in 2012

The numbers for Sony Ericsson (SE) for Q3 2011 are in and they show that SE is starting to turn things around a bit from the horrible quarter it had in Q2 2011. In Q3 2100 SE shipped 9.5 million units compared to the 7.6 million units shipped in Q2 2011. The Q3 11 number is still down from the 10.4 million SE moved in Q3 2010. The average selling price was up in Q3 2011 to 166 euros compared to 156 euro last quarter.

Total sales for Q3 11 added up to 1,586 million euro compared to 1,193 million euro in Q2 2011 and 1,603 million euro in Q3 2010. SE has also stated that 80% of the sales it makes are smartphones and it has shipped 22 million Xperia smartphones so far. The gross margin for the quarter was 27% down 3% year-on-year.

The biggest thing that came out of the earnings event was the factoid that SE pans to move its entire portfolio to smartphones in 2012. That means a bunch more Android devices on the market since SE is using Android on its smartphones. It also means if you have your eye on some sort of SE feature phone you better buy it soon.

Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman teardown photos posted at FCC

Over the past year or so, Sony Ericsson has been bringing their A-game to the Android smartphone and oddities market, and with the combination of the forever-famous Walkman brand name, they’ve got a good chance of continuing to increase business built on the Google mobile OS platform. What’s up today is an FCC listing of the Sony Ericsson media player known as Live with Walkman, a long name for an interestingly quite possibly awesome future mobile device running Android. Look like the originally announced bright white to you?

Everyone likes to see the insides of their handsets before they see the outsides in action, right? Have a look right here and see some guts! Sony Ericsson has never been known for bad looking insides, and they certainly don’t disappoint with several layers of green, black, and gold. What we know about this device right this moment is that it’s got a 5 megapixel camera on the back, a VGA camera on the front, a 3.2-inch 480 x 320 pixel resolution TFT LCD display, more than likely a 1.2 or 1.5 GHz single-core processor inside, and a big fat slew of Sony and Sony Ericsson-specifically optimized apps and sound-related features.

This device has been announced to be coming out inside the fourth quarter of 2011, all of its features appearing to sort of pale in comparison to the tip we’ve reported on the Sony Ericsson Nozomi 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and a fantastically dense-pixeled display. We’ve also got word that the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S coming inside September, and though we’re almost certainly not going to be getting Ice Cream Sandwich any time soon, Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread should be pretty much a fix.

Sony Ericsson Nozomi tipped with 1.5GHz dual-core and 342 PPI display

It should go without saying that 342 PPI on a smartphone display is big, it’s bad, it’s amazing. One of the things that makes the iPhone such a blockbuster device (amongst many things, I’m sure) is the fact that it (the iPhone 4, that is) has a 326 PPI on its display. That’s THICK and it makes brightness and sharpness tip and top. What we’re to understand today is that Sony Ericsson will be punching that PPI (pixels per inch) directly in the nose with a device currently code-named Nozomi. Will this dual-core 1.5GHz device bring the beatdown, or will it come out much, much too late?

ac3311b5cc40x475.jpg Sony Ericsson Nozomi tipped with 1.5GHz dual core and 342 PPI display

As all smartphone purchasers, lovers, and collectors must understand, these past few years have proven one thing above all else: it’s all about timing. If you release an awesome phone 5 months later than you initially intended, it’ll likely have had its specs trumped by several different manufacturers in the meantime. When it comes to Android devices, this is doubly so as the difference between 1GHz and 1.5GHz or even 1.2GHz can be a big one (on paper, at least.) That’s why it’s just about as important as it possibly can be that a device such as this be released AS FAST as possible.

This device, supposedly called the Sony Ericsson Nozomi, will be coming out inside March 2012 (inside or outside the USA we’re not sure) with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor (this being the first dual-core processor on a Sony Ericsson device) along with a 4.3-inch 1280 x 720 pixel resolution display (again, therefore 324 PPI). This device is also set to have 1GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, and will have micro-SIM capabilities. It’s good that this device has 32GB of internal storage because it’s got no memory card options otherwise. You’ve got NFC inside alongside a 1750mAh battery and if Sony Ericsson continues its trend of releasing “hero” phones in March as 2010′s March played host to the Xperia X10 and the 2011 March showed the Xperia arc and Xperia PLAY.

There’s a big handful of devices on sale this weekend up until Labor Day including more than a couple of our old favorites on the Android front. All of these sales are online exclusives and each of them requires a 2-year activation, but beyond that you’re in the sweet, sweet discount world. First there’s the HTC ThunderBolt which is now $ 149.99 – this is the only LTE-capable smartphone on the whole list, and buying it here will mean it’s pre-owned. Then there’s the Motorola XOOM for $ 299.99 – note that this is a pre-owned model you’ll be getting – this is the only LTE-capable tablet on the list. There’s a couple of LTE mobile modems on sale too but I’ll let you check those out for yourself since they’re not Android-based.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 ? A decent Android phone

With the release of the manufacturer’s first Android based mobile phone Sony Ericson delivers a phone equipped with the largest display, fastest processor and largest camera, ever to date.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is comparable to Apple’s Iphone when looking at its dimensions, which are: 119mm x 63mm x 13mm. The mobile phone runs on a Qualcomm 1Ghz Snapdragon processor, which was first used in a phone by Toshiba, and recently was also used in the HTC Legend and Desire, which makes for fast running applications.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has the largest display ever seen on a mobile phone running Google’s Android OS, and has a 4″ touch screen. The largest screen ever placed on a mobile phone is on the HTC HD2 Windows Mobile device, which is 4.3″in size. The screen is capable of displaying 480 x 854, and is reacts well to touch, but is not capable of multi touch. The phone is equipped with a 1500 mAh battery, which supports up to ten hours of talk time.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 supports social networking through use of Sony Ericsson’s Timescape application. The downside of this is the slow refresh rate of 15 minutes, which is to long for a social network application. The phone also has an older version of the Android version installed, which does not support all the features, the current version of the OS supports.

With the Xperia X10 Sony Eriksson has made a good first effort in delivering a mobile phone, with the intention of moving into a new direction. The main positive factors are the large screen, fast processor and more than adequate camera. However, the device needs work in the area of social networking, and support of the Android functionality. Many of these issues could be resolved through the announced software patches that will be released later this year.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini ? A Mini In Every Way

The recently concluded 2010 Mobile World Congress showcased a dazzling array of mobile phones we can expect to see starting next month.  At the Sony Ericsson booth, we got to see a couple of miniaturized versions of one of the hottest handsets ever announced, the Xperia X10 which recent developments point to an April arrival in the UK markets under the Vodafone UK.  Not bad as it’s just a 5-month delay. Satio was delayed by 8 months.

We’re now talking about its inferior variants in the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini and the Mini Pro which were announced to be available in the 2nd quarter of the year.  But April is the start of the 2nd quarter so it looks like we can expect the entire Xperia line to hit the markets then.

Standard Features

Really nothing new about the Mini, other than the fact that its feature set justifies the name quite convincingly.  Nearly everything about it is a shrunken version of the fabulous X10.  Nearly, because it’s still a 3G on the dual band UMTS with HSDPA/HSUPA.  Being a dual band GSM/GPRS/EDGE on the 2G network remains unchanged.

You still get WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, A0GPS, microUSB 2.0 and a 3.5mm headphone jack.  And more importantly though disappointingly, you still get the old Android 1.6 Cupcake OS with the Rachel/UX user interface and carries the much vaunted Timescape and Mediascape integrative apps so you see all your communications and media files in one place, respectively.

Humbling the Mighty X10 Features

About the only good things about the Mini is that it will come in six different body colors – silver, red, lime, pink, black and pearl white.  Another is the fact that with a shrunken body profile, it has a slimmer and smaller palm print at 83 x 50 x 16 mm and weighing a remarkably light 88 g to make it arguably the lightest touchscreen smartphone on the planet.

Compare that to the 135g weight of the X10.  But with nearly a quarter of the weight and a third of the X10 size shaved off, we can understand the pruning of the features to mini dimensions as well.

Apart from the body, the next obvious thing is the pedestrian 2.5-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with QVGA resolution.  The mighty landmark setting 4-inch display couldn’t be more humbled.  But it’s great of Sony to put in 16 millions colors instead of just 64k. An accelerometer and a scratch resistant surface are still there.
From an 8 to 5 megapixels, that’s the camera resolution paring done on the Mini.  It still has autofocus, LED Flash and geo tagging, but there’s no more image stabilization or face/smile detection of the X10. Video recording is not even detailed so it must be too embarrassing to show in its press release tech sheet.
Phone memory is another minimized feature from the generous 1 GB on the X10 to just 128MB in the Mini. You can still thank a microSD expandability feature than can get you up to 16 GB to make up for it,

With all the minimized features you also won’t need the powerful 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon.  The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini now runs on a less endowed Qualcomm MSM7227 processor clocked at 600 MHz.

Sony Ericsson debut with first Android phone

Sony Ericsson has revealed its first mobile phone built around Google’s Android operating system.

The Xperia X10 has an 8.1 megapixel camera, music player, fast web access, touch screen, GPS and can use apps from the Android Market or SonyEricsson’s Play Now Arena. Known as Rachel while under development, the X10is expected to go on sale early in the first quarter of 2010. According to the company it is to be the first of a family of Android-based telephones that may launch across the year.

Sony Ericsson’s previous smart telephone, the X1 which ran on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system, had disappointed many users particularly with regards to its control interface. The X10′s user interface has been given an overhaul to help owners simply access social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook as well as email and other messaging applications.

The phone can work with 2nd and third generation mobile networks, including HSPA, as well as Wi-Fi. The X10 runs version 1.6 of Android and has a 1Ghz Snapdragon processor from US chip firm Qualcomm. Facial recognition software built in to the phonephone will be in a position to analyse and recognize up to five faces in a single picture, immediately connecting that photo with a user’s'social telephone book’ and calls and messages sent to that person.

SonyEricsson’s decision to produce Android-based phones is widely seen as an endeavour by the handset maker to win back some share of the market. For the last three quarters it has reported losses due to serious competition from rivals, in particular Apple’s iPhone. Many handset makers are increasingly turning to the Google Android platform in an effort to see off the challenge posed by Apple’s iPhone. Unlike the iPhone, most Android devices can run background apps, permitting people to get push notifications when they receive a new Facebook message or tweet, and feature’social’ telephone books, that pull in contacts from a wide selection of offline and online sources, and thread chats without reference to the strategy of communication used to contact a mate.

Sony Ericsson have not said when Xperia X10 will go on sale or in which countries or networks. No price for the telephone has been set either.

Android ? A new Operating System from Google

Android is an open-source Software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications to allow developers to develop Internet style applications on the phone. The development of the android operating system takes place through the use of a software development kit provided by Google. Android is NOT Java technology even though it uses the Java programming language. It is based on the Linux OS and coded in a Java-like language.

The idea behind the platform is to combine technology companies with mobile companies to produce an open operating system that can be updated by any developer to improve the product for its users. Developers can use SDK kit to create applications that work with the android platform to gather other applications in addition to those included with the android operating system itself. The SDK includes an emulator that will help developers test their applications on the android operating system. The android operating system is also built under the phenomenon that each application is as good as the applications that are included.

Developers looking to create mobile experiences using the android operating system can do so using a standard Application Programming Interface (API) permitting them to use a series of procedure calls to control and access common elements within android. The API also permits items stored within the mobile environment, like contacts and appointments, to integrate with web services like online calendar and interaction services like email, groups etc.

Previous Surveys says that the mobile market is three times bigger than the Internet. Google purchased Android on July 2005. Currently LGSony EricssonHTC (Htc Magic — The latest Android Phone from HTC)ASUS, Samsung, Garmin, HuaweiToshiba, & Motorola are creating gPhones – Phones that use Android software. There have been reports that a T-Mobile device and an HTC device might use the android operating system in the near future.

It will be interesting to watch which devices and carriers choose to support the android operating system. The deal that development is open to anyone who wish to use it, will also allow those with the need to create custom applications for a mobile device to do so, without requiring the purchase of special software and other items, which can sometimes be difficult to buy. Manufacturers like DELL, Sony Ericsson, LG, Huawei, Archos, Lenova and many others have also planned to release Android based Devices in the upcoming years. So there is a surprising fact prevailing around that the foot mark of Android may change the way mobile phones and other devices are used.
