Galaxy Nexus could be at Best Buy November 27, 2011

The Verizon branded Samsung Galaxy Nexus seems to have surfaced in a leak from a Best Buy flier. Best Buy terms the Galaxy Nexus as part of the Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone line, and even calls it the “Samsung Nexus Prime”. It seems silly that Best Buy would leave out T-Mobile’s Galaxy S II and even the AT&T Skyrocket in the flier. Whether or not it will still be called the Galaxy Nexus by other carriers is still unknown.

f37e588f1540x349.jpg Galaxy Nexus could be at Best Buy November 27, 2011

Though we still don’t know when the phone will be available on other carriers, this evidence displays that “prices [are] good for all Best Buy mobile stores from 11/27/11 to 12/25/11″. This may mean that the Galaxy Nexus will be available and priced by the 27th, or just as reddit user ihaveagalaxyprobem (how fitting) said, “they (the fliers) could have been made before Verizon finalized a date”.

Either way, we now understand Best Buy and Verizon will be calling the device the Samsung Nexus Prime. The time it has taken for an actual Galaxy Nexus release date has been way too long. We are all together in this prolonged wait and I’m ready to buy mine now, how about you?

Samsung DoubleTime Review

The flexibility of Android and the continuing march of mobile technology progress are making Android available on hardware and price points that would have seemed impossible just a couple of years ago. The latest phone to skirt the line between smartphones and featurephones is the Samsung DoubleTime, a QWERTY phone with a novel hinged and double-screen design. For $ 50 on a new two-year contract it’s definitely on the low end of AT&T’s smartphone lineup, but can it stand up on its own? Let’s find out.

20f764ecbb40x360.jpg Samsung DoubleTime Review

Hardware

In fact the DoubleTime can literally stand up on its own, thanks to its horizontal clamshell design. In the fashion of “messaging” phones that have gone out of fashion as of late, the 3.2-inch screen flips up to reveal a second, identical LCD panel below, opposite the large and comfy QWERTY keyboard. 480 x 320 resolution isn’t anything to write home about, but on this screen size it’s as dense as is practical. Below the exterior screen you get pink-shaded physical nav buttons, which are repeated on the inside above the keyboard.

The phone is undeniably chunky for its width and height, but considering the keyboard and both screens that’s understandable. A phone like this can live and die on its hinge mechanism, and in that regard it does very well indeed: it snaps into place at about 130 and 160 degrees with a firm click, making it useful both as a speedy text-entry device and a desktop or nightstand display. The exterior is clad in eggshell white, and feels commendably sturdy.

3d355de50a40x360.jpg Samsung DoubleTime Review

The DoubleTime’s specs, alas, leave a lot to be desired. It’s one of AT&T’s few new smartphones that only uses 3G, not the HSPA+ “4G” that they’re so keen on advertising. A 600 Mhz processor is pokey, even at this price point, and a mere 260 megabytes of user-accessible storage is downright frustrating, even with the included 2GB MicroSD card. A 3.2 megapixel camera is suitable only for low-quality snapshots in good lighting, and you’d better hope you’ve got good lighting, since an LED flash is painfully omitted. The primary draw for the hardware is the clamshell keyboard form factor – unfortunately, you’ll have to ignore just about everything else to consider the DoubleTime over its AT&T contemporaries at a similar or even lower price.

Software

The Samsung DoubleTime comes loaded with Android 2.2 Froyo. Let’s go over that again, just to make sure: the Samsung DoubleTime comes loaded with Android 2.2 Froyo. For the record, it’s been just shy of one year since Gingerbread became available, and similarly spec’d phones have had it almost as long. It’s possible that the DoubleTime’s low storage space prevented a later version of Android, but even if that’s true, another gigabyte or two surely wouldn’t have made this little phone too expensive. Given that Samsung and AT&T seem to think that Froyo is good enough for the moment, it’s my opinion that they won’t be interested in updating it. Ever.

9053d07b5c40x360.jpg Samsung DoubleTime Review

That said, the software is pretty solid as Froyo goes. There’s very little in the way of AT&T or Samsung add-ons, besides the now-ubiquitous account manager and AT&T Navigation. (That makes me laugh every time I see it.) IT’s possible that the phone’s low storage actually prevented it from being burdened with bloatware. The slimmed-down version of TouchWiz is snappy in both portrait and landscape modes, and Samsung’s customizations take advantage of the hardware to the fullest extent.

Calling and Texting

Call quality was in line with other AT&T phone in my area, though it dropped them on two occasions. This isn’t unusual for my home town. 3G speeds were reliable in urban areas. But if you’re interested in a phone at this price with a full keyboard, odds are you want to text, and text a lot. On that score the DoubleTime is hard to beat. Because the keyboard essentially takes up an area of space that’s the same at the entire height and width of the device, it’s nicely spaced with a full number row and D-pad. Firing off long texts or URLs was an easy and pleasurable experience, and thanks to the extra height enabled by the clamshell design, significantly more comfortable on my fingers than slider phones with their narrow keys.

e3dc37f79940x360.jpg Samsung DoubleTime Review

Media and Battery

You’ll absolutely want a larger MicroSD card for music or photos. With that caveat, the DoubleTime works well enough as an MP3 player, with a surprisingly loud speaker for its small size. The built-in YouTube app ran well, though Flash video is a choppy and generally frustrating experience. Videos taken with the camera were smooth, but on a screen this small, it’s not much fun to watch them.

The battery is a small 1200mAh, but that’s rather typical on a phone this size. Keep in mind that only one screen is active at any given time, so the dual-screen design doesn’t hinder the battery at all. The DoubleTime lasted me all day even in a low-signal area – it’s probably getting some very efficient use out of Froyo, minimal bloatware and Samsung customizations. Users should have no issue getting through a tough workday without recharging.

3faa64325740x360.jpg Samsung DoubleTime Review

Wrap-Up

As an Android fanboy, the choice to limit the DoubleTime with Froyo really, really gets on my nerves. But from the perspective of a first-time smartphone buyer, who just wants a phone with a great keyboard and decent call quality, with Android and app installation as an after thought, it’s a pretty good choice. Music fans and shutterbugs will want a bigger SD card, but excellent battery life means that this little phone is ready for lots of service in between charges.

ddf481da6f40x359.jpg Samsung DoubleTime Review

The DoubleTime probably isn’t the phone for our most dedicated readers, but it’s worth considering for family members or friends who aren’t interested in Ice Cream Sandwich or massive screens. At $ 50 on contract it’s a little pricier than some other AT&T phones (most of which have better hardware) but that excellent keyboard makes it worth considering even so.

Android Community Weekly: November 20, 2011

It’s been great here in the tech world this past week, with Google Music now open to the public, some amazing Black Friday sales starting to emerge, and finally some more Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) in our lives. Monday, Notion Ink hinted that on November 17, Android 4.0 source code would likely hit the net. Fortunately, they were wrong again – as Google leaked it to the public later that same day!

c5764084a9weekly.jpg Android Community Weekly: November 20, 2011

I’m sure you’ve seen our great hands-on and unboxing of the Galaxy Nexus, but don’t forget to check out some of our more specific videos! One of them including a 1080p video sample and some photo samples. Most interesting about the Galaxy Nexus (and Android 4.0 for that matter), is that once the video capture application is launched and running, you can just tap the screen to save precise video frames straight to the phone! Yet another video worth taking a look at is how voice dictation works on the Galaxy Nexus. Yes, I know we’ve all seen it already in the official release of Android 4.0, but such an amazing feature deserves to be watched twice. Google finally patented its pattern unlock screen Friday, but what about its new facial unlock feature? It seems that will prove to be just as unique.

Nowadays, more than 50% of smartphones sold worldwide run Android OS. I’m sure this number will rise steadily as amazing deals are just around the corner. T-Mobile just launched its “Magenta Saturday Sale” offering any one of their smartphones (and even a few tablets) for only $ 49 as a downpayment. Even better, Sam’s Club will be offering the Galaxy S II, PHOTON 4G, and DROID Charge for less than a dollar on Black Friday! If you’re on a budget and need to upgrade that old smartphone, then keep your eyes peeled for deals like these.

Be sure to check out our official HTC Rezound review, as it is quite the powerhouse. Though not as popular in the media as the Motorola DROID RAZR, it is just as speedy. The HTC Rezound looks to be replacing the HTC Thunderbolt, and is also capable of 4G LTE speeds. Verizon’s 4G LTE market went live in 14 new locations Thursday, so be sure to check if it now reaches your area! Also, AT&T started expanding its fairly new 4G LTE technology to 6 new markets today; hopefully other carriers don’t get left too far behind!

Also reviewed this week was the Samsung Captivate Glide on AT&T. No, it can not access AT&T’s 4G LTE markets, but nevertheless – this QWERTY slider has some great specs. Finally, Google Music has been released to the public! Users can now enjoy the ability to purchase songs straight from the Android Market. Even better, installation of Google Music allows you to stream up to 20,000 songs from your own library! This includes the ability to “offline” your favorites whenever you want.

With Black Friday approaching so quickly, be sure to check back with Android Community as often as you can; we’ll be positing any great deals that leak or are sent in so you can get them while they last!

Ice Cream Sandwich’s Easter egg: Nyan Cat Android

Every new version of Android gets its own special Ester egg, activated by rapidly tapping on the version number in the About Phone section of the settings menu. Gingerbread got some Android zombie art. Honeycomb got the bumblebee Android. And Ice Cream Sandwich gets… a pop-tart robot?

7f642913a740x298.jpg Ice Cream Sandwich’s Easter egg: Nyan Cat Android

OK, explaining this one requires a little bit of Internet meme history. The “Nyan Cat” meme started when a sprite drawing of a cat-Pop Tart from a site called LOL-Comics was posted to YouTube, with an accompaniment of sickeningly addictive J-pop singing “NyanNyanNyan”, the Japanese equivalent of “meow meow meow.” The meme exploded back in April, and you’re welcome to check out the video here. You’ve been warned.

Someone at Google is a fan, because they’ve replicated the original in Ice Cream Sandwich. You can see it running on the Galaxy Nexus, courtesy of YouTube user shnsk100:

Naturally the cat has been replaced with the signature green Android, and the pop-tart is now – what else? – an Ice Cream Sandwich. Once again, Google engineers have a little fun in the bowels of Android’s source code. Here’s hoping that it won’t be too long before you can check out the animation on your smartphone, or pick up a Galaxy Nexus from Verizon… eventually.

Check out our hands-on looks at Ice Cream Sandwich below:

LG Optimus 3D enhanced Gingerbread update packs nice upgrades

Early this month I mentioned that, the update for the Optimus 3D smartphone from LG was rolling out in Europe to bring the smartphone up to Android 2.3. That rollout didn’t happen and is just now set to come out. LG has announced as of today that the 2.3 Gingerbread update is bringing with it some nice new updates for the smartphone including better network speed and a lot more.

b9dc52c81640x3881.jpg1 LG Optimus 3D enhanced Gingerbread update packs nice upgrades

The 2.3 update was optimized for the Optimus 3D and has tweaks for enhanced power management, new advanced copy and paste, as well as UI tweaks. The update adds enhanced HSPA+ for faster packet data services allowing downloads up to 21Mbps. The device also gets enriched 3D with a new 3D video editor and full-screen UI preview.

The update brings improved multimedia with 2D video stabilization and faster gallery activation. That video stabilization will make it easier for users to shoot clear and steady video in 2D mode. The power tweaks will allow longer MP3 playback time and more. The update will roll out in Europe in the week of November 21 with other markets coming online through the end of the year.

Report: most free anti-malware apps are almost useless

Malware is a growing problem for Android, both within the Android Market and without. But when it comes to free applications, it looks like users aren’t getting a lot of help. According to a security report from AVTest in Germany, nearly all the free anti-malware apps are almost completely useless, with many failing to detect even a single threat in a test environment. Their results after testing seven popular free apps are below – it looks like users are getting exactly what they pay for.

d9e597d95940x225.png Report: most free anti malware apps are almost useless

The most worthless apps (relatively speaking, anyway) were Creative Apps’ Antivirus Free, GuardX Antivirus, and LabMSF Antivirus beta, all of which failed to detect a single threat on the tested smartphone. BluePoint Antivirus Free, Privateer Lite and Kinetoo Malware scan all fell in at less than 10% detection rates. Only Zoner AntiVirus Free scored even vaguely respectable numbers, detecting just 32% of threats after a manual scan. To reiterate: the best free ant-malware app detected less than a third of the threats after testing. The most popular app, Antivirus Free (one of the 0% results) has been downloaded more than a million times.

The state of anti-malware and anti-virus on Android may be pretty sad, but it’s not that surprising. After all, Android just passed its third birthday, and with almost 200 million users worldwide, it’s a prime target for hackers and thieves. Security will get better as Google and others learn how to plug up the current vulnerabilities. That said, an experienced Android user is far more likely to have personal information stolen via a security vulnerability (like HTC’s Sense issues a while back) than an app download – so long as he or she remembers never to install an apps from an untrustworthy developer or publisher, especially if it’s a non-Market download. For a more in-depth look at the security report, you can download the PDF here.

HTC Rezound Hands-on

Verizon and HTC join forces once again to bring the HTC Rezound, a 4G LTE-carrying smartphone that’s also the first in the United States to have Beats by Dr Dre from Monster. This device has a 4.3-inch S-LCD display at 720 x 1280 (otherwise known as 720p) pixel resolution, a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor under the hood, Sense 3.5, Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread, and 2 megapixel camera on the front plus an 8 megapixel camera on the back capable of 1080p video recording. This device is set to go directly up against the other Verizon smartphone released recently, (just today, as it were,) the ultra-thin dual-core LTE Motorola DROID RAZR, another device we’ve got a full review of here on Android Community up already!

04661aff7240x3671.jpg1 HTC Rezound Hands on

What we’re looking at here is a device that’s a whopping 13.65 mm thick right down the center, but with edges that taper off on all sides, it doesn’t seem nearly so monstrous as other devices with comparable thicknesses. In fact it does feel rather comfortable to hold due to its lovely ribbed soft-plastic back and will appease those of you wishing for more substantial feeling devices on the whole – you know where your money went instantly, basically. The chassis are black plastic on the front and the back, the front all shiny and hard, the back all soft and matte, with red accents in several places to keep your eyes alive while you flip the handset over in your hands.

2587c0948d40x485.jpg HTC Rezound Hands on

Have a peek at our first hands-on and the unboxing of this device here:

You’ll find the Beats “b” logo on the back of the device, this indicating that you’ve got a device that’ll certainly weigh in on the question of whether audio quality really does matter through your headphones on a smartphone, and inside the box you’ve got not only some iBeats earbuds, but a lovely pleather holder for both your earbuds and the collection of different sized earbud covers so you’ll be sure to have the right size no matter your ear size.

9010d0175640x360.jpg HTC Rezound Hands on

The device’s display may well be the biggest hinderance from your humble narrator saying this device has an edge over the RAZR, but because I’m certainly no opponent of HTC’s Sense interface and the Rezound is certainly full of it, we’ll just have to see. Have a peek at a couple of comparison photos in the gallery below, check the full specifications of the Rezound at the bottom of the post or over at the Device.AC listing, and above all else: ask questions!

I’ll be reviewing the device here on Android Community shortly, so if you’ve got anything you want to know about it, leave a comment!
