WiFi QR Share lets visitors scan to access your home LAN

26370d623eg8azWA.jpg WiFi QR Share lets visitors scan to access your home LANWith wireless data caps and throttling now an unfortunate reality on many American wireless carriers, WiFi hotspots are once again a necessity even for “mobile” devices. If you’ve got friends and family coming over for the holidays, odds are pretty good that they’d like to borrow your home network for some no-penalty Internet access. To avoid that unfortunate situation where you spend long minutes reciting the amalgamation of letters, numbers and characters you use to secure your WPA2 connection, use WiFi QR Share, which automatically embeds all the relevant information into an easily dispensable QR code.

Because the app requires access to some fairly sensitive password data, you must be a rooted user in order to take full effect. Non-rooted users can only send the SSID of the network. On the plus side, the app has access to all the wireless networks that your smartphone or tablet remembers, which in most cases is also all the networks associated with your Google account. You do not actually need to be connected to any WiFi network in order to share it – the app generates the code without using any Internet connection. Once it’s transferred the data, the visitor can simply copy and paste the password when he or she connects.

WiFi QR Share is now in its first release, and so far has near universal acclaim in the Reviews section of the Android Market. If you want to disseminate the code even faster, you can email it directly to others, or just email it to yourself, print it out and let visitors scan the paper. Free Internet: it’s a better party favor than fruitcake.

Huawei promises showstopping smartphone for Mobile World Congress

As previously stated, Huawei is making a big push towards high-end smartphones worldwide, and in the United States in particular. In a bit of non-specific PR relayed to GSM Arena, the company promised to unveil “our smartest, fastest and most high-performing smartphone yet” in an event just before the start of Mobile World Congress in February. Consider our interest thoroughly peaked.

dfcc03335c40x360.jpg Huawei promises showstopping smartphone for Mobile World Congress

Huawei has been making leaps and bounds as an OEM. It’s become one of the top ten phone manufactures, shipping 10.6 million phones worldwide in the third quarter – for comparison, Motorola shipped 11.2 million. That’s total phone,s not smarpthones or Android phones in particular, but it’s hard to deny that they’re gaining momentum quickly. With a growing footprint and capital, they could rise above the crows of Chinese manufacturers and take on the likes of ZTE and LG in 2012.

Huawei’s hardware is pretty respectable too. We lamented the T-Mobile Springboard, AKA the Huawei Mediapad, but only because of a spotty implementation of Honeycomb; the tablet itself is a solid piece of hardware. Early reviews of the Honor/Glory/Mercury are positive, and in some markets it’s the very first device to receive an over-the-air Android 4.0 update. Huawei’s Vision even earned a design award last month.

Android Community will be on hand in Barcelona, covering all the latest smartphones. We’ll be sure to bring you Huawei’s Spanish surprise, whatever it turns out to be.

Quick Review: PinShare for BlackBerry smartphones

If you’ve read any of my articles regarding the BlackBerry PIN, you may have noticed that my views on privacy are slowly being swayed towards being more open with sharing my PIN. The other day, Kevin introduced you to a new application/social network known as PinShare; where, as you would probably guess, share your PIN with potential connections. Before doing so, you can view their image, read their brief bio and finally connect with them via BlackBerry Messenger. You send off a message, up to 100 characters, and it shows up in the recipient’s message inbox. A home screen notification icon is also generated. You can then choose to connect with them over BBM or not.

Essentially, it’s another database of BlackBerry smartphone users looking to share their PIN, yet, at the same time, it’s not. It’s a smooth rolodex of social users looking for a variety of things, but most importantly a decent conversation. Now I did notice that my BlackBerry Bold 9900 would start to lag from time to time while running PinShare; perhaps an indication that it was retrieving a large amount profiles that were just created? Just keep in mind that you’ll be receiving messages from people that may not want to, be the same can be said if you were to post your PIN in a forum. Once you trudge through the unwanted messages (which in reality come in rather infrequently) you may find a select few worthy of your BBM. Check out the video for a quick walkthrough as well as how to set up your own profile. You can grab PinShare for free from BlackBerry App World. Screenshots can be found after the jump.

Galaxy Nexus devices slip out early to some from Best Buy and Verizon stores

If you have been one of the many Android fans who are spamming the websites of your favorite stores looking for the Galaxy Nexus to go on sale; you need to go into the closest Best Buy or Verizon store sand see what you can do. eWeek reports that in some Best Buy and Verizon locations, the Galaxy Nexus has been sold early to customers. This isn’t such good news today as it would have been weeks back, still no one likes to wait.

On December 9, a software engineer from CrowdFlower named David Fayram reports that he walked into a Best Buy store, and they sold him one of the phones in stock and sitting there for the official launch. Another user reportedly purchased one from Verizon that was in the stockpile waiting for the official launch.

I don’t think many of us will be surprised to learn that Fayram reports the smartphone has the typical Verizon bloatware installed. The Verizon software in question includes the My Verizon Mobile and Verizon migration Assistant software. The actual launch is December 15 and most of us will have to wait until then to get the phone.

LG Spectrum/Revolution 2 pics surface

Some photos of a new smartphone from LG called the LG Spectrum have surfaced. The phone will head to Verizon and be called the Revolution 2 on the Verizon network. The photos surfaced after the rumor that the handset was coming reports PocketNow. The Spectrum has now been confirmed as the Revolution 2, which surfaced in the Verizon system last month as model number VS920.

A photo showing the phone from just about all angles has surfaced and a few specs are tipped as well. The phone will run Android and pack a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. It will have an 8MP camera and will rock LTE connectivity for the Verizon 4G network as shown with the little 4G logo on the back of the smartphone.

The phone appears to be reasonably slim and has the three buttons on the bottom of the screen that are seen on most of the Verizon Android devices recently. Hopefully, we can learn a bit more about the hardware in the coming weeks and see how well the smartphone performance against the other high end Android devices like the Razr and Galaxy Nexus that Verizon has in its line.

Android Community Weekly: December 11, 2011

We’ve finally finished a couple excellent reviews, have a better understanding of whats been holding up the Galaxy Nexus, and learned of some cool new accessories for your new (or older) device! The first review definitely worth taking a look at is of the ASUS Transformer Prime. Cory Gunther put it to the test through some rigorous benchmark tests and great video demonstrations. To date, it has performed better than any current Android tablet on the market. Next up, Michael Crider posted a review of the new Nitro HD by LG. It turned out to have quite a crisp IPS LCD display, but turned out to be a quite bland device in general.

In other news, the legendary HTC Universal – a 6 year old Windows Mobile device – received a functional port of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). For a clunker with only 64-128MB of RAM, this is a definitive feat. Tuesday, Verizon’s Motorola DROID XYBOARD was officially released to the press in both 10.1″ and 8.2″ models. We had been told the XYBOARDs would be available on the 9th, and sure enough – tablets went on sale later that day.

As for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus – there is still no definite release date. We had seen that phones were arriving in stores suggesting a retail date of December 9th, yet that day came and passed. To make things worse, boxes of the device were seen at Verizon and RadioShack but store workers state they can’t sell them until they receive the “OK” from corporate. If they are waiting on a software fix, it might be better to just start selling the devices and push the update afterwards. At this point, we would all understand.

Also, be sure to check out the Macro Lens Band that can fit over any camera to help take sharp closeups with your smartphone! It looks amazing, and I’ve got one in the mail headed my way now. Finally, due to Google’s 10 Billion Apps promo, you guys will be able to pick up a nice group of apps for the next 4 days – so keep checking back here on Android Community for a daily list, or navigate yourself to the Android Market!

International users can get in on Google’s new Currents app with leaked APK

We’re just now starting to get a peek into Google’s new Flipboard-style news service, Currents, but unfortunately non-United States users can’t download the app from the Android Market. Luckily, they don’t have to: a kindly XDA-Developers member has posted a leaked version of the international app. It looks like just about anyone outside of the fifty states can get in on the action, so head on over there to give it a try.

7d26c54ccenation.jpg International users can get in on Google’s new Currents app with leaked APK

In case you haven’t already, check out our initial impressions of Currents, with a hands-on video. It’s basically a new style of aggregation engine that adds support for paid sites, though all the content that’s already in Currents is free. That means that international newshounds should be  to access everything at the moment. The app plays out like a grown-up version of the Android Genie widget, which is almost certainly already installed on your smartphone under “News & Weather.”

The magazine-style layout is exciting, and while it doesn’t display as much raw information as something like Pulse, it does it in a very organized, readable way. Will Currents remain as an essential Google service, or fall by the wayside like so many others? (I’m looking at you, Google Listen.) Only time will tell, but it’s sure got a promising start.

Motorola DROID RAZR gets a white version for December

Nothing says “Happy Holidays” like the world’s most neutral color. In addition to a rather subdued DROID XYBOARD announcement, Verizon let slip that an all-white version of the Motorola DROID RAZR would be available this month. Aside from a frosty casing, there’s no difference from the model that launched last month – you’ll still need to fork over $ 299.99 and sign up for a new two-year contract, or be eligible for a renewal. A specific date was not mentioned.

If it’s bargains you’re after, and you happen to be in the market for both a new LTE smartphone and tablet, you may want to take advantage of Verizon’s upcoming promotion. Purchase a new DROID RAZR (presumably including the white model) and you can take $ 100 off any DROID XYBOARD, from the $ 429 8.2-inch 16GB version all the way up to the $ 729 64GB 10.1-inch version. You’ll also be eligable for $ 50 off “select Motorola accessories” – a perfect opportunity to stock up on cases, docks or what have you.

The DROID RAZR joins a host of white smartphones this Christmas, including the Samsung Galaxy S II, Galaxy S II Skyrocket, HTC Incredible II, HTC EVO 3D – suffice it to say, there’s a lot of white going around. Naturally, that other Verizon phone, you know, the one we’ve been waiting on for over a month, the one that seems to be available for everyone except Americans – hasn’t been announced. But we get a phone that’s in plentiful supply in white. Thanks a lot, Verizon.

Review: Mindmaps for the BlackBerry PlayBook

a52f82ce3cndmaps.jpg Review: Mindmaps for the BlackBerry PlayBook

With a touch screen, we tend to look for more free flowing applications to help us in our daily tasks. While having a list we can look at is helpful, there’s something about a touch screen that has us looking for a more attractive way to visualize and manage projects, tasks, ideas and even goals. The BlackBerry PlayBook, to me, is the perfect sized tablet for making my To-Dos easy to read and easier on the eyes. Take away a physical keyboard (BlackBerry smartphone or computer keyboard that is) and it almost feels like I’m looking directly at what’s inside my brain (yeesh, I thought my bedroom when I was a kid was messy!). It’s just me and my noggin, trying to hash out ideas, making sense of the process. What a lot of people do is tap into the power of a mind map, whether it’s created on a black or white board, a notepad or a napkin.

Mindmaps allows you to do the same thing, except on your BlackBerry PlayBook and not on a mustard stained napkin. Not only does it help you keep track of the thoughts in your brain, but it also lets you manage the layout, colours and more. What was once a great idea may have to be put on the backburner. Mindmaps can help you move the idea around without having to scribble it out. There other mind mapping BlackBerry PlayBook applications out there, so let’s see how this one handles your crazy ideas.

Futuremark 3DMark App coming soon to Android, brings benchmarks to a new level

Oh man, this is awesome news for enthusiast and gamers alike in the world of Android. We have many benchmark applications such as Quadrant or CF Bench and what not for Android that tests overall performance but today I’ve now learned the best of the best in the benchmark business, FutureMark, will be coming soon to Android phones and tablets early 2012. I’ve used FutureMark 3DMark 06, Vantage and even 11 on my PC for years to test gaming and overall performance and I’m happy to announce this is coming soon for Android.

406afc33c4remark.jpg Futuremark 3DMark App coming soon to Android, brings benchmarks to a new level

The Finnish company FutureMark has been making some of the best and most trusted and highly rated benchmark suites for PC enthusiasts since early 1998 and are now moving to add Android to the list. They’ve begun development on what they are calling 3DMark for Android (working title) and aim to have it ready for mass usage come early 2012. With the wide array of smartphones available, and Android tablets taking off while getting powerful quad-core processors the need for a reliable and scalable benchmark service will be needed. They plan to deliver just that.

3DMark for Android features may include:

- Measures gaming performance using rendering, CPU and physics tests.
- Stunning real-time graphics push the OpenGL ES API to the limit.
- Complementary online service to compare results between devices.
- Results will be comparable with 3DMark for Windows 8.
- Currently in development, expected to be released in 2012.

Jukka Mäkinen, CEO of Futuremark had this to say,

In 2012 we will bring 3DMark to the Android platform with a professional grade benchmark that can be trusted by manufacturers, suppliers and vendors to provide the definitive measure of gaming performance on Android while showcasing the very best in real-time graphics and effects.”

Results will be comparable across devices and platforms like Windows 8 and will be viewable right from your smartphone or tablet as well as saved online for viewing later and comparing with others. Just like their current line of benchmarks for PC’s. Another important note here is this will be a private application unlike Vellamo that was designed by Qualcomm that some claim is favorable to their processors.

Not only will FutureMark and 3DMark most likely become the absolute standard for benchmarking in Android, but it will probably make us all forget about Quadrant and the others very quickly if done right. I remember the days of overclocking my NVIDIA eVGA GTX 260 SLI graphics cards as far as humanly possible and running 3DMark to compare with my friends. I can’t wait to do the same on my quad-core Android devices soon. Futuremark will push the graphic limits of our smartphones just as they do on PC. Check out this 3DMark 11 Direct X 11 sample video for an example on their work. I can’t wait to try this level of benchmarking on Android.
