Alpha ROM for Android ICS on Xperia smartphones available

If you are, the owner of certain Sony Ericsson Xperia Android smartphones that can’t wait to get Android 4.0 ICS onto your device the alpha ROM is available right now. There are multiple catches to this ROM that you need to be aware of before you run over and download it to try ICS out. The ROM will work only with the arc S, neo V and Xperia ray smartphones and brings the device to Android 4.0.1.

c7cb56df99ia ics.jpg Alpha ROM for Android ICS on Xperia smartphones available

The ROM is noted to be only for devs and it will not work for ordinary use since only a few of the features are working. One big catch is that it won’t allow phone calls to be made. The phone must be unlocked using the Sony Ericsson Unlock bootloader service. Once you unlock that boot loader, you will not be able to get the final ICS update on the phone.

Other limitations of the Alpha ROM include no Bluetooth, WiFi, ANT+, or FM radio. The Modem is turned off, the SIM card doesn’t work, and GMS apps are not included, like Gmail. There are a number of ICS features included with the Roboto font, Holo theme, updated UI web browser, and integration with the new messaging bar among others. Check out the video below to see the ROM in action.

HTC Vivid Review

The HTC Vivid has the distinction of being one of the first phones to take advantage of AT&T’s fledgeling LTE network, a feature it shares with its launch partner the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket. But the Vivid isn’t relying on a single bullet point to make its purchase case – the dual-core Gingerbread phone has some high-end specs and a huge 4.5-inch qHD screen. Does the high-end featureset and a fancy new network connection make the Vivid a worthy buy?

73702e9c3940x3601.jpg1 HTC Vivid Review

Hardware

The first thing you notice upon picking up the Vivid is its heft. The thick plastic and metal construction makes it tip the scales at 6.24 ounces, about 30% heavier than phones of the same general dimensions from Motorola and Samsung. The weight gives the phone a definite high-end feel, but what it also gives is, well, weight. It’s up to you whether or not that’s an important statistic, but after carrying the Vivid around in my pocket for a few days, I was definitely wanting a lighter phone.

The phone has a distinctly angular style that’s accented by a full metal backplate. Slide it off and you’ll find a SIM card slot with a fancy new AT&T 4G LTE mini-SIM, and the battery, which must be removed to access the empty MicroSD card slot. The slim and unfortunately weak back speaker sits on top of the 8 megapixel rear camera, which is paired with a sharp 1.3 megapixel front shooter. The left side of the phone holds a standard MicroUSB port, the right a silver volume rocker and the top the power button, all without error or complaint. HTC’s standard capacitive buttons reside below the screen.

f129d6c21340x360.jpg HTC Vivid Review

The screen itself is a standard TFT LCD. It’s sharp and clear, even at the high end of the size scale for Android phones. Unfortunately the brightness and viewing angles aren’t anything to write home about – for that you’d be better to look to the Skyrocket’s Super AMOLED panel – but resolution junkies will be happy. Reading and video were a little dark for my tastes. 16GB of internal memory should be enough for most, and those who require more can expand with MicroSD. Inside the retail packaging you’ll find nothing but a wall-wart and a USB charge/data cable.

Over several days I had no issues with any of the hardware, include Bluetooth, which can sometimes be picky on HTC phones. The only real complaint I have besides the weight is that the all-metal back is unfinished, with the exception of an HTC logo and some grip dimples. It makes the phone all too easy to scratch, so expect the back to start looking considerably worn after a few weeks.

Software

HTC Sense is in its Sunday best on the Vivid. There’s nothing really to say in addition to what’s already been said on the software. On the generous 1.2Ghz dual-core processor there’s no noticeable slowdown on the homescreen or when switching between apps, and heavy-hitting tasks like Flash, Netflix and the like don’t phase the phone at all. AT&T’s standard bloatware load is here, but unlike some recent phones including the Skyrocket, none of it can be removed – bummer. Still, to HTC’s credit it doesn’t appear to slow things down.

If you’re tempted by the prospect of LTE, you probably want the latest and greatest software as well, and I’m happy to report that AT&T has confirmed the Vivid will be getting a tasty scoop of Ice Cream Sandwich. The upgrade won’t come until the spring of next year however, probably owing to HTC’s Sense skin itself. You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have… manufacturer customizations. Until then, Gingerbread will have to satisfy.

Phone, Data and Battery

fe60358af140x3601.jpg1 HTC Vivid Review

If you’re lucky enough to live in one of AT&T’s LTE coverage areas, you’re in for a treat. Even with only three bars of LTE I got 16-18Mbps down consistently. That’s likely to lower over the next year, but for now, the network is under low stress and you should see some great performance. Standard 3G/4G reception seemed in line with other AT&T phones. For a more in-depth look at the LTE network, check out our data speed tests.

Call quality was generally good, with one exception. The front speaker had some volume issues, and combined with a few long calls in the low-coverage area around my home, talking became a chore on more than one occasion. If you generally stick to AT&T’s four or five bar locations – like pretty much all of their major metro LTE coverage zones – you should be fine. If you’re in the habit of traveling outside of major cities, voice performance may suffer.

8151c6e67140x3601.jpg1 HTC Vivid Review

The 1650Mhz battery seems to do well on standard operations like browsing and music playback – if you never turned the phone off you’d think it was great. Unfortunately the standby performance isn’t as great. Without some careful management of apps and usage, you’re probably not going to see a full day’s use out of the Vivid, and that’s doubly true for LTE users.

Media

The camera and video were typical of HTC’s later offerings, good but not great. In bright lighting your shots will be clear and distinct, but indoors or after sundown you’ll see a familiar fuzzy lines and muted colors. On the plus side, the 1.3 megapixel front camera was noticeably sharper than others, or so I was told from the other end of the phone line.

Wrap-up

If you’re a fan of HTC’s solid design, you’ll like the Vivid. Some cutting-edge internals and access to LTE speeds doesn’t hurt, but a sub-par battery and weak speakers do. Still, at a new lower price of $ 99.99 on a new contract, it’s a great deal for a fast, big-screened phone, even if the screen itself is merely OK. Make sure and get your hands on a Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket before making your final decision.

Verizon’s Samsung Stratosphere rooted already

If you want to make your Android phone work harder, there’s only one way to go: root. Verizon’s latest phone, the Samsung Stratosphere, has been rooted by some industrious modders. While the root method isn’t the easiest in the world, but it should be easy enough for most advanced Android users. For the record, the Stratosphere was only on the market for a little under two weeks before a root method was discovered.

80322e57d740x360.jpg Verizon’s Samsung Stratosphere rooted already

The Stratosphere is essentially the same hardware as the Samsung Epic 4G, with a little elbow grease to move it over to Verizon’s LTE network and update the software to sweet, sweet Gingerbread. As far as hardware goes it’s strictly middle of the road, but for the moment it’s the first and only QWERTY slider phone to take advantage of Verizon’s LTE network. Interestingly, it seems to be the first Verizon LTE phone to use a Mini-SIM card, saving some small but valuable space in the phone’s interior.

The phone is basically on-par with the original Galaxy S, plus some extra bulk to accommodate a full keyboard. Android Community got some hands-on time with the phone last week, and a review is coming shortly. Would-be modders should know that Samsung releases the source code for its kernels on a regular basis, so now that root has been achieved, full-fledged custom ROMs won’t be far behind.

Motorola Xoom 4G OTA update details

Those of you lucky enough to have received your Motorola Xoom back from the 4G LTE update, you should now have a few noticeable changes to your device. Either that or an OTA update will be hitting as soon as you power up. When the hardware update first started last month we saw reports on the OTA update, bringing the new Android Market to Honeycomb and more, and today Verizon has made it official and posted the update details and changelog information.

47c839772340x495.jpg Motorola Xoom 4G OTA update details

Users may be wondering what all was changed other than the addition of a 4G LTE radio inside the device, and now we have all the details. The Xoom 4G has been updated to Android 3.2.1 Honeycomb build version HLK75D. Although we aren’t seeing much the details (below) seem to mention the new market, market auto updates in the future for tablets, and as usual a few bug fixes. Apparently they’ve also addressed some connectivity issues so that is good. Hopefully 4G LTE will be stable, it works great on my Tab 10.1 LTE.

840f87c85d40x540.jpg Motorola Xoom 4G OTA update details

-Android Market has been updated.
-When toggling between Airplane Mode, you will no longer receive the following error message: “Wrong Operator: SIM card is from an unknown source.”
-After performing an (OTA) update, the Android Market shortcut on the homescreen works correctly.
-Android Books app updated.
-Android Market Terms and Condition text is now easier to read against background color.
-Android Market app now updates on its own.

They’ve also mentioned a few things for the web browser and security related things, then again like I mentioned above Motorola and Verizon are focusing on 3G/4G connectivity. They’ve fixed a few bugs that should keep data stalls to a minimum and keep 4G running strong. While Xoom users sadly can’t say they had the first 4G LTE Honeycomb tablet at least they finally do have LTE on board. I’ve not experienced the updated Xoom myself but I’ve been hearing good things from friends and members in the forum. Let us know how the updates running for you, we’d love to hear.

Track and Protect for Android review

This is a quick review of Track and Protect, a consumer security application for Android and Symbian smartphones. TnP allows you to locate you phone if stolen, and remotely take photos, initiate calls, lock or wipe the phone, and even sound an alarm. It will even send you a text message if the thief swaps in a new SIM card. It’s a very cool application that you ought to check out.

Day by day the number of people losing their cell phones is sky rocketing! Statistics have shown that in Kenya alone, the number of reported mobile phone loss cases is approximately 2000 daily! These are shocking statistics and the situation is quite alarming in the rest of the world. Every phone user buys a phone reasoning from the fact that this cell phone will last for quite along time. The user takes his phone with him to a park and suddenly forgets it there. He goes back to find it and its no where to be found! Such cases are rampant.

Cell phone owners have to find practical techniques to salvage their cell phones once are they are stolen or lost. A cell phone is an important gadget to own. No one actually can afford to d without his cell phone especially if you are used to.

Technology has advanced rapidly and it is spreading across the world like bush fire! We have a solution to your lost cell phone. This is unbelievable! Today with the advancements on satellite technology, cell phone tracking companies have come into rescue. These companies objective is to help in tracking lost cell phones for their clients.

What to do.

Clients need to subscribe for special software from a desired company download on his 3G phone and install it. The client then acquires license from the company. The installed software assigns a unique number that identifies each mobile phone uniquely as well as the SIM card number being used by the customer. The software then requests for another alternative phone number and an email address. If the phone is stolen and the SIM card replaced with another one, an SMS and an email are automatically sent to the alternative cell phone number and email address provided giving all the details of the person currently using the stolen phone including his or her location.

Track your expensive cell phone

These days, most people are going for expensive cell phones. My perception of an expensive phone is one that has either Bluetooth, infrared, you can browse with and have large internal memories and many other sophisticated technology. These phone usually cost above $100. This is only what I perceive as an expensive phone.

One thing these people have not been able to protect against is loss and theft of their phones. Although they can afford these phones, the risk of losing them is very easy. This is because of the increase in crime, especially muggings and loss. It is possible for you to be walking home and then suddenly a group of rowdy youths ambush you. Or you could be on that public service vehicle and your phone is in the pocket. Someone can either slip their fingers into your pocket or even purse without you knowing or if you sit in a certain position the phone slips off and fall on the chair. It is only when you get off the public service transport that you notice that you have lost that wonderful blackberry of yours.

I have good news for you. You no longer have to worry about those people who mug you or when you lose your cell phone on that public transport because you can track it. There is software that can be installed on your cell phone that can help in this tracking.

How it works:

Install the software on to your phone. Purchase a code that will activate the software to work fully. You also have to provide a number of someone you trust, e.g. a next of kin. After that you are set to go. If you lose your phone and someone replaces the sim card, the cell phone number of the person who replaced the sim card will be sent to the number you had provided. So you can contact that person and tell him that he has your phone. The person will definitely get scared and return to you!!

How to recover your stolen cell phone in seconds

In the city that you live in, it is probable that there are muggers and pick pockets who are always scheming on how they can rob and steal from you. The pick pockets usually target crowded areas where there are many people bumping into one another. In the commotion, someone may ‘extend his or her hand’ into you pocket or even purse to steal your mobile phone and money.

In the cases of mugging, people will follow you from a distance and will time when you are at a vulnerable place. These are people who have probably been monitoring you and know the routes that you use when going to certain places. They will overwhelm you and take your stuff including your priced and precious mobile phone. This is all unfortunate and you really can’t know when it will happen.

But in all this, there is good news! It is possible to track and recover your phone within seconds. This is thanks to the new mobile phone tracking software technology. This software is able to track where your cell phone is. What one has to do is install the software on their cell phone. As part of the procedure of installing the software, the user has to specify a number of someone he trusts or is in regular contact with. This is because when your cell phone is stolen, a text message will be sent to this phone. Let me just give you a quick example.

Say your cell phone is stolen. As soon as someone replaces your sim card, a text message is immediately sent to the number you had provided. The text message contains the location and the cell phone number of the person using your phone. From there, you can do the necessary…(necessary means take the necessary legal steps in locating your phone).

Stolen Cell Phone? This is what to Do

Mobile phone theft is on the rise like nothing else and it did not need to have a rocket scientist to oversee at the launch of this technology that cell phones will be prone to theft like never before. Just as the name suggests cell phones are mobile, small in size and portable. What else do you think would be so easy for a thief to go away with as easily as a cell phone? Think of how much the thieves resale the phones, it’s amazing a cell phone you bought at Ksh.30000 will be sold at Ksh. 5000! This is so, so that they can sell the phones as fast as possible and as much as they still!
Efforts by manufacturers to make tracking stolen phones have hit the rock. There is cell phone Manufacture Company that has come up with techniques to trace your cell phone whenever it is stolen.
But there is light at the end of the tunnel afterwards! Mobile phone owners need not to cry any more when they lose their cell phones. They can only be part of the spectator team and watch their phones come back into their hands.
What you need to do is very simple. Thanks to the companies that have worked out to catch up with the cell phone thieves that have been a major threat to the community. Get to one of the best and most trusted companies with these services of cell phone tracking near you. A good example in Kenya is East African Data Handlers. These companies supply unique software that the customer subscribes to and installs to his or her phone and get a license from the respective company. That’s all. The installed software will note your IMEI number so that it can uniquely identify your phone and the SIM (subscriber Identity module) card number being used on that particular phone. The software also requests the user for another preferred number and stores it.
Incase the user’s phone is stolen, and a new SIM card is installed in the phone, an automatic SMS are sent after every 30 minutes to the preferred number stored by the software at the cost of the new SIM card user  giving details of the new user.

Want to frustrate cell phone thieves? Then you must have this!

The introduction of cell phone technology was met with resistance because it used to be very expensive. But as time has progressed mobile phones have become more and more affordable. It is even possible for a young child to teach you a few technological things about your cell phone that you never knew. This shows you how fast innovation can spread and be accepted. This form of communication has helped many.

But there is one thing that irritates many cell phone users: cell phone thieves. The other someone was a victim of mob justice because of stealing a cell phone that was worth less than $80. The people who were doing this were probably people who have been victims of cell phone theft and needed to ‘revenge’ on the unfortunate person. So how can we deal with this cell phone theft issue?

Simple: get mobile phone tracking software.

I was once told that when you see a problem you should see a potential opportunity. This problem of cell phone theft has been there for long and now there is an opportunity and a solution. Cell phone thieves are about to get frustrated.

This tracking software integrates the use of programming systems with GSM systems in locating your cell phone. After you download the software onto your phone, you can be able to know who has it. This is because as soon as the software notices that the sim card has been changed, the GSM system will send a text message and an email to a certain cell phone number that you had provided during registration. With that, problem solved. Thieves will be frustrated and you will be able to get back your phone.

You can read more on this mobile phone tracking system.
