Samsung Nexus S Ice Cream Sandwich update possibly delayed

We are starting to get reports in from all angles that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Samsung Nexus S has been halted by Google. The update was started late last week by Google themselves after initially testing it with Google employees. While the delay hasn’t been confirmed many users are experiencing issues and recently are unable to update to the new software.

71384847ab40x405.jpg Samsung Nexus S Ice Cream Sandwich update possibly delayed

Over at the official Google Support pages many have updated just fine but plenty of users have actual received the update notification, downloaded most or all of it and were then unable to update. A Google employee came in and left a comment that only adds to the confusion. He states the update could have temporarily been paused in certain areas “while we monitor feedback”.

Monitoring feedback doesn’t mean the update has actually been delayed or paused, but this is very much a possibility. We have been hearing reports about a battery bug and a few other possible issues with heavy CPU usage in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Many are speculating the latest update to 4.0.3 will solve these issues but that is the build currently rolling out to Nexus S users. At the moment we aren’t exactly sure what seems to be the case here but I’m sure we’ll know more soon.

Is your Nexus S having issues after the ICS update? We’ve heard scattered reports that the same is true for the Galaxy Nexus and we must admit our review units don’t have the best battery life, but that could be 4G LTE’s fault. We’ll be sure to monitor this story and its status as things progress.

Sony Ericsson commits to Ice Cream Sandwich for all current phones

Following the flurry of excitement after the release of the official Ice Cream Sandwich source code yesterday, Sony Ericsson is assuring its customers that every Xperia phone made in 2011 will receive an official update. That includes the Xperia arc and arc S, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo and neo V, Xperia mini and mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active, Xperia ray as well as Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman. Of course, not all models are available in all markets.

af4b8d170040x340.jpg Sony Ericsson commits to Ice Cream Sandwich for all current phones

Sony didn’t give any timeframe on when to expect the updates, but for those who bought their phones on contract, remember that they’re largely contingent upon carriers’ cooperation – a particularly belligerent carrier might choose not to update their phone at all. Other major manufacturers are quoting between six weeks and four months for the first ICS updates, but given the unfortunately spotty history of Android rollouts, it may be quite a while longer before some see any new software. Sony’s reputation on the matter isn’t the best in the Android business, but it’s far from the worst – we’ll see how Sony’s proposed acquisition of Ericsson affects software development.

Sony joins the major Android manufacturers in reiterating to its customers that they’ll be seeing Ice Cream Sandwich at some point. HTC and Samsung have promised updates for those devices that can handle the increased system requirements, and Motorola said that phones running ICS would begin appearing just six weeks after the source code was released. (For the record, that’s right around New Years’s, Moto. Just sayin’.) If you’re brave and at least reasonable technical, community-authored ICS ROMS and mods should begin appearing this week, with more stable and reliable versions to follow.

Vizio 8 owners get three free months of Hulu Plus via software update

Vizio’s 8-inch tablet is a bit of a tough sell in a sea of similar competitors, despite its relatively low retail price of $ 299. But today it’s a little more attractive: a new software update is rolling out that includes three free months of access to Hulu’s premium streaming app, Hulu Plus. That’s in addition to a free month of Netflix, making the Vizio tablet a suddenly attractive alternative for video-hungry Android users.

df1a279408rt 500.jpg Vizio 8 owners get three free months of Hulu Plus via software update

The 8-inch tablet is a solid piece of tech, but it’s got more than one thing going against it. First, for a little more dough you could get an Asus Transformer or Acer Iconia Tab, both of which run Honeycomb instead of the Vizio’s skinned Gingerbread. And Honeycomb tablets have access to Google apps and the Android Market, which the Vizio tablet sorely lacks. The Vizio tablet still gets access to a wide collection of included apps like the Nook bookstore and any side-loaded apps that users can fit on its 4GB internal storage.

The addition of some free video streaming makes the Vizio tablet about $ 40-50 higher in a value proposition, assuming that you intend to use the Hulu Plus and Netflix apps. You’ll need to sign up for an account with both services, including a credit card number, before getting access to the trial period. Once the trial is over you’ll be automatically renewed, assuming you don’t cancel your subscriptions. So what do you think – does some free video streaming service change your opinion on Vizio’s Wifi tablet?

Asus executive shows off Transformer 2 live, coming November 9th

We’ve been seeing a lot of the Asus Transformer 2 in the last few days, and now it’s been confirmed by none other than Asus executive Jonney Shih. Shih spoke at the AsiaD conference hosted by All Things D, where he pulled out what is almost certainly a nearly complete EEE Pad Transformer 3 and its keyboard attachment. Shih also confirmed that the tablet is using “Nvidia’s quad core processor”, which to our ears sound like the Tegra 3.

449f31ea45asia d.jpg Asus executive shows off Transformer 2 live, coming November 9th

Speaking on the original Transformer, Shih noted that it’s easily one of thew most popular Honeycomb tablets, and that Asus is on course to sell 2 million of them this year alone. He also said that the company has great hopes for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and that tablets running the new software may be coming before the end of the year. The Transformer 2, according to Shih, will be formally announced on November 9th, and that the 10-inch slate will be a mere 8.3mm thin.

Rumors of the Transformer successor have persisted since the summer, when we first heard that Nvidia’s “Kal-El” Tegra 3 processor might make its debut in the device. That would certainly line up with the new video that Nvidia was showing off, not to mention the sci-fi inspired video that dropped today. Shih’s November 9th date is just a little later than a UK online retailer’s guess at November 7th, but that gives us some hope that the tablet may be coming sooner rather than later. It’s a bit of a conundrum: since the original Transformer was so solid I’d like a crack at the Transformer 2 as fast as possible, but the longer the release date is dragged out, the more likely it is that it’ll come pre-loaded with Ice Cream Sandwich.

When asked about the PadPhone, the dockable phone-tablet combo that Asus showed off in concept form months ago, Shih said that the company expects the phone to go through the carrier gauntlet for a Q1 2012 release.

Galaxy Nexus and HTC Rezound priced at $299 on Verizon, ads start 11-10

Whoa, Nelly! Verizon’s list of upcoming devices has leaked, and it includes a couple of names that should turn heads. Both the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the HTC Rezound are listed at $ 299 with advertisements beginning on November 10th. Between this Droid-Life leak and a good bit of earlier info, this leaves little doubt that both devices will find there way onto Verizon’s shelves next month.

e6ab194d77ezound.jpg Galaxy Nexus and HTC Rezound priced at $299 on Verizon, ads start 11 10

The Galaxy Nexus, AKA the Nexus Prime, is widely believed to be featured in Google’s Hong Kong announcement next Tuesday. Like previous Nexus phones it’ll serve as the development platform for the next version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich. Google has been hyping up the new software with the standard statue unveiling, and numerous photo and video leaks have given us a pretty good indication of the phone’s look and capabilities.

The HTC Rezound was previously code-named the Vigor, and like the Galaxy Nexus it’ll use Verizon’s 4G LTE network. The phone features a 720p screen (also widely rumored for the Galaxy Nexus) and a top-of-the-line 1.5GHz dual-core processor. The Rezound has been a steady target of leaks since the summer.

It’s important to note that the leaked Verizon information doesn’t represent a release date – the “minimum advertised price” list is just a guide for official ads. But given that other members of the list like the DROID BIONIC and the HTC Rhyme are listed at their current MSRP, it’s a safe bet that three hundred bones is what you’ll be paying for both the Galaxy Nexus and the HTC Rezound. This may or may not include Verizon’s frequent mail-in rebates.

0c5fd9125574x500.jpg Galaxy Nexus and HTC Rezound priced at $299 on Verizon, ads start 11 10

Take a look at the version number of the Nexus – SCH-i515. It’s distinctly different than the GT-i9250, which passed through the FCC earlier this month with AT&T and T-Mobile radio bands. That’s a good indication that the Galaxy Nexus, or the Nexus Prime, or at least some comparable device will be making it to three different carriers soon.

Keep an eye on Android Community this coming Tuesday night as we cover the Samsung/Google Hong Kong event. SlashGear will be covering the Ice Cream Sandwich and Galaxy Nexus unveiling live in China, beginning at 10AM Wednesday local time. That’s 10PM EST Tuesday evening in the United States.

Official DROID 2 Global Gingerbread update is coming soon

Good news, DROID 2 Global Edition users, your long-awaited Gingerbread update is right around the corner. Verizon updated its support page today, announcing that the newest system update would bring Android 2.3 to the popular handset. The page doesn’t give an exact date, but Verizon usually doesn’t wait more than a week after an official update guide to begin rolling out the software.

275a53ae6e40x290.jpg Official DROID 2 Global Gingerbread update is coming soon

The Motorola DROID 2 Global was originally set to get a taste of Gingerbread last month,  but some last-minute issues forced a retraction. According to Verizon’s documentation, the new software version will bring new features like improved power management, keyboard detection, a revised user interface, new encryption and VPN options and an improved calendar. Speaking of calendars, it’s only been 11 months since Gingerbread was available to manufacturers – and we’re expecting an official announcement for Android Ice Cream Sandwich any day now.

Other improvements highlighted by Verizon include better email syncing, more stability (i.e. fewer device crashes), improved Bluetooth power and volume management, better WiFi power management and new versions of Google Books, Accuweather, the Amazon MP3 store, Blockbuster (woo), and Flash. The software update isn’t available just yet, but keep checking the OTA update in the settings menu – you never know when the staggered rollout will begin. If you’re the warranty-voiding adventurous type, don’t forget that leaks of the update have been available for some time.

Tips for Buying Software Online

Buying software online not only helps save the planet, it also has other benefits, including:

Ease and Simplicity. You can purchase software in your underwear at 4am if you really want to. Shopping online doesn’t have to be done within regular business hours, nor do you need to look your best to do it. It’s also easy to shop around for the best prices and takes less time than driving to the shops.

Save Money. Companies often have better deals when you purchase their software online. When you take out the middle man, you’re not paying for transportation, storage and packaging costs, nor are you paying the percentage the shop will make from selling you the product.

Online software can save you a great deal of time and provide you with a lot more choices than you might find locally but it can also be a little tricky to navigate especially if you are new to buying software online. Whether you are buying new software or upgrading an existing program here are some tips to help make it all less complicated.

Read Reviews
The toughest part about buying software is that you don’t get to try before you buy. If you are buying software you’ve used before great you know what to expect, but if you are simply choosing and hoping you’re making the right choice, then customer reviews can tell you a lot about a piece of software. In fact they can help make that decision a whole lot easier.

Compatibility
Make sure the software you are purchasing is compatible with your operating system, as well as the right amount of memory and disk space. For software to function correctly you must have at least the minimum requirements.

Read The Description
You can become a little more familiar with a piece of software by reading the description on the box. It should also tell you the capabilities of the software. Make sure it’s what you want because software is non-refundable.

Reputation Means Everything

Pay By Credit Card
Paying by credit card is a smart option because you will get some protection from the credit card company should the software not be delivered or as described.

Learn The Return Policy
You should know the return or refund policy before you buy any software. Software is usually non-returnable unless it is damaged in which case it’s usually an exchange. However, you still need to know how many days the policy is good for.

A new method of buying software online includes paying and downloading. The ability to immediately download has certainly been advantageous. Now you can decide you need a piece of software and in no time you can buy, download, and begin to use. If you are new to downloading on the web, relax because it can be a lot of fun.

Many software packs comes with a trial period which is fantastic! You can try it for however many days the trial is for and then if it’s what you want you can buy it. They’ll send you a key code, which you enter into the trial version, and suddenly you have the full software package. If you don’t like it, simply uninstall it and forget about it.

Training Staff On New Business Software

Many businesses each year bring in new software to help run their business more efficiently and effectively but there are always minor problems along the way. The most common is staff not wanting to see change and also worried they won’t be able to understand the new software put in place.

If you decide to implement new business software you should make sure all your staff understand why you are putting in place new software, the benefits of this and also any important points of what the software package does to help the business. The more you explain the more likely your staff are to understand and enjoy the new training.

There are two different ways in which you can train your staff on new computer software but there is the idea of not training your staff at all and letting them learn the new software themselves but this is just unproductive. Your staff could take weeks maybe even a good few months to learn a new piece of software on their own wasting their time and yours as well as money. If you want to run an efficient business then you will need to always train your staff with new software as well as up to date training when necessary. The more your staff know the more productive they will be in their work.

The two ways in which you can train your staff are as follows:

On-Site Training – this offers you the ability to train multiple staff in a suitable training environment with all the resources needed also at hand. Training lots of people at the same time can work out well sometimes but other times there are a variety of people, some who can pick things up quickly but others who take longer to understand and therefore may struggle getting the hand of the software from this kind of training. Sending a large group of staff to be trained can be costly but also not possible as not everyone can leave the place of work as work needs to be carried out still.

Bespoke Training – this kind of training offers a bespoke service in the way of understanding that different people learn at different speeds and in different ways. The same is for every business has different training requirements for their staff and themselves and this needs to be taken into consideration. If you have a large group of staff who have the same ability and require the same training on a certain area of the business software then this can be arranged. Bespoke training is a good way of getting exactly what training you and your staff require as an individual business. Whatever the training may be from accounting packages to call centre software to customer relationship management software, training can be given. Bespoke training offers you a tailor made solution for your business training needs.

So if you’ve having a new software package implemented in your business or workplace from outsourced, in-house or purchased from a shop you need to train your staff on the new software. Not only will this make the switch over more productive but it will also help your staff welcome the new software if they fully understand the software package and how it will not only help them in doing their work but also how it will help the business become more productive and more competitive within their market.

Hidden Costs of Construction Software

The cost for new construction software is not as obvious as you might think. While the price for the software itself is usually stated up front, there are a number of “hidden” costs associated with buying new software that aren’t always talked about. These costs, which can be hard dollar expenses or less tangible economic expenditures, should be factored in to arrive at your true cost for new software

Here are five “hidden” costs associated with construction software.

1. Training and Implementation Costs

Construction software buyers are often naive about training and implementation costs, which are usually a 1:1 ratio to the software cost. (This means that a $10K system will probably cost about $20K by the time training and implementation expenses are added in.) The more complex the software system is, however, the higher the ratio will be. The ratio for these costs can go as high as 1:5 or even 2:1 for systems on the highest end of the complexity scale. One of the biggest mistakes made, especially by smaller companies, is to try and save money by skimping on training and implementation assistance. Not planning for this cost almost always comes back to haunt you.

2. Staff Upgrades

Although existing employees are usually expected to operate new construction software, sometimes it’s necessary to hire people with greater skills to run the system. If this happens to you, expect increased payroll expenses. As part of the software evaluation process, you must evaluate your staff capabilities carefully if you wish to avoid this “hidden” cost. Who seems confident and ready to take on a new system and who is frightened or holding back? The competence of your staff and their willingness to learn the new system are every bit as important as the software itself.

3. Ongoing Maintenance Costs

Once you buy construction software, you will most likely incur an annual fee by your vendor for maintenance. Annual software maintenance fees usually cost between 18 and 24 percent of the software price. But there are other, “hidden” maintenance fees to be aware of such as paying to having custom reports written. Put money in your budget for these items so you’re not taken off guard when the bill comes in!

4. The Cost of Buying Wrong/Less-Than-Optimum Software

Although buying the wrong software, or a system that is less-than-optimum for your needs, is not a true out-of-pocket, measurable cost related to construction software, it is a real expense. Suppose, for example, that certain types of ongoing transactions are very cumbersome to perform in your new system and take an extra hour per week to do. This drags down staff efficiency and adds to their frustration. Another example would be running a project management system that’s not integrated with accounting. This will require duplicate data entry to keep both applications synchronized. Consider these “hidden” costs and avoid them if possible.

5. Spreadsheets

Another “hidden” cost of construction software relates to employees using special spreadsheets to manage data because they don’t like the way the new system performs. For example, if the equipment module lacks certain features for maintenance scheduling, your staff will be tempted to use spreadsheets as a workaround instead of trying to make the software work. Another common example is using a custom spreadsheet for estimating rather than an industry-specific estimating program. Work toward eliminating spreadsheets.

No Cost Surprises

Taking a realistic look at the true costs associated with new construction software will save you from surprises down the road. Training pays for itself very quickly and various maintenance costs protect your investment. Wean employees off their favorite spreadsheets and focus on using your new software to increase efficiencies throughout your organization.
