JXD tablet S7100 just begs for an Apple, Sony and Microsoft lawsuit all at once

There’s a lot of litigation flying through the air over various Android devices, but if Hong Kong-based manufacturer JXD comes anywhere near the US, there’ll be a lot more. Its latest device manages to ape the iPhone and PSP, and manages to infringe on intellectual property from Nintendo, Sega, Microsoft and probably a few independent Android developers for good measure. The website for the JXD S7100 doesn’t so much “think different” as “think people won’t notice a hodgepodge of triple-A consumer electronics have been ripped off all at once”.

40599355eb97x540.jpg JXD tablet S7100 just begs for an Apple, Sony and Microsoft lawsuit all at once

The device clearly has the Android gamer in mind, though by the looks of it JXD is encouraging some almost certainly illegal emulation to boot. Advertising ”Apple games, Android games, Sony games, Nintendo games, Arcade games, Sega games”, they follow through with standards like Angry Birds, Mario Kart 64 and others, as well as some baffling Microsoft Office apps. If a no-name Hong Kong OEM has managed to develop Office for Android, they need to be marketing a whole lot more than some PSP knockoff.

The 7-inch tablet manages to include WiFi, a front-facing camera and an HDMI-out function into its oversized iPhone body, and with a Cortex A9 processor it might just be able to run a stolen misappropriated N64 emulator at a few frames per second. There appears to be at least a little bit of custom software on the device, in the form of a proprietary ”game center” app. The S7100 doesn’t appear to be for sale directly from the manufacturer, but you’ll probably be seeing them in your local slightly shady electronics retailer soon – just don’t buy one within 100 yards of a patent lawyer, or his injunction senses will start tingling.

Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus launch: retail impressions

As you pour over our hands-on coverage of Android’s new favorite son, consider that not all of us here at Android Community got a Galaxy Nexus hand-delivered from a red-clad Verizon cherub. We only have one one review unit, so the rest of us (being just as rabid about Android as most of you are) went out and picked one up at retail. Verizon’s rollout for the Galaxy Nexus is rather indicative of the attitude they’ve displayed towards the device so far, so we thought we’d share some thoughts.

f35788123740x360.jpg Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus launch: retail impressions

Driving to my nearest Verizon corporate store, there’s nothing on the outside to indicate that a major phone release is taking place today. That impression extends to the inside of the store, where you’ve got to hunt among the various smartphones and tablets to find the Galaxy Nexus. My store had a single demonstration unit available. Since there was a line of people (or more accurately a cloud of people, thanks to Verizon’s kiosk-based service system) waiting to buy the phone, there was also a line of people trying out the demo device.

The Galaxy Nexus shared a section with the HTC Rezound, DROID RAZR and DROID Incredible 2. There were two small banners featuring the Nexus, one in which it shared the exposure with the HTC Rezound, and another where it got equal billing with the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play – a phone that’s been available for a year, and is currently free with a new contract.

aa32e813d840x360.jpg Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus launch: retail impressions

In comparison with the iPhone 4 and the Motorola DROID RAZR, the Galaxy Nexus barely registered a retail presence. Both of the former phones has an entire section of the store to themselves, with full displays and four demo units in their section. Nowhere in the store was the Galaxy Nexus promoted on its own. There were about a dozen people in my store, all there to pick up a Galaxy Nexus on the very first day.

On the plus side, the store had about 40 units available, a solid number for any phone launch. The employees were knowledgeable, and the man handling my purchase was positively excited – he’s a big fan of unencumbered Android as well. But for new customers who didn’t know about the Galaxy Nexus, there was no pomp and circumstance. Any new, uninformed smartphone buyer looking for a high-end device would almost certainly walk away with a RAZR, Rezound or iPhone.

df017ebd6440x360.jpg Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus launch: retail impressions

What does this indicate? Combined with Verizon’s downright apathetic marketing, almost non-existent communication and lack of any sort of pre-order process, this tells me that Verizon Wireless just isn’t that excited about the Galaxy Nexus. They’d much rather you buy almost any other phone, even lower-specc’d, cheaper devices like the XPERIA Play. Considering all the events leading up to the very first Nexus phone on Verizon, owners may want to treasure it: it may indeed be the last.

Story Timeline

I’ll add this disclaimer: my experiences are only at one store. Other stores or markets may feature the Galaxy Nexus more prominently, especially at second-party retailers. If you’d like to add your own observations on your purchase experience, feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments section. And stay tuned – we’ll have plenty of coverage on Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus and Ice Cream Sandwich, leading up to our full review.

US judge denies Apple injunction – Samsung sales are safe for now

It’s a good evening for Truth, Justice and the American Way, even if those on the receiving end are Korean. Rueters reports that late Friday the judge on the docket in Apple’s suit against Samsung in the United States threw out the case, stating that an injunction on Samsung’s devices would not prevent serious damage to Apple’s sales. It’s the most significant development yet in a case that’s been going on since April of this year.

a9af01869e40x405.jpg US judge denies Apple injunction – Samsung sales are safe for now

In the U.S., Apple claimed that the Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy S II and Galaxy Tab 10.1 violated its design patents, bearing a resemblance to the iPhone and iPad, respectively. In November a judge ruled that Samsung’s tablet might indeed violate the patents, but expressed doubt that such was a justification for granting a sales injunction. District Judge Lucy Koh made good on those statements today, saying, “”It is not clear that an injunction on Samsung’s accused devices would prevent Apple from being irreparably harmed.”

This isn’t the end of Apple’s litigious crusade. The Cupertino company will almost certainly appeal, though at this level of the U.S. civil court system it’s entirely possible that the appeal will be denied. Apple has a stable of patent firepower, and if this case fails completely they’re likely to fire back at Samsung with another in a few months, as they are already doing with rival Android manufacturer HTC. Apple has been particularly litigious against Samsung worldwide, particularly in Germany and Australia. Down under Apple won a preliminary injunction against the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which is scheduled to lift on December 9th, baring a successful appeal. The injunction against the same model is still in place in Germany, though Samsung has released a revised Galaxy Tab 10.1N… which Apple promplty filed a lawsuit against.

302422e6a740x298.jpg US judge denies Apple injunction – Samsung sales are safe for now

It is to be hoped that a failure in the U.S. District court system, if indeed it comes to that, will influence Apple or at least other court systems to treat the company’s frivolous and vague design patents with more skepticism. Just today Apple’s requirements for a non-violating device were made public, including “a non-rectangular shape without rounded corners” and “a thicker profile”. Though Apple’s legal crusade against Android manufacturers (and notably not against Google) is likely to continue, the decisions handed down in the U.S. and Australia indicate that judicial systems worldwide are beginning to see the company’s flawed idea of a competitive market as just that: flawed.

What does it take to stop an Apple lawsuit? Build a horrible device

As part of Apple’s patent case against Samsung in the US, it couldn’t just simply object to the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Apple had to submit alternatives for Samsung to follow which would allow it exemption from their overly vague design patents, and The Verge got their hands on some of the redacted documents. So what did Apple suggest to end Samsung’s legal trouble? Make a device that no one would want to use.

302422e6a740x298.jpg What does it take to stop an Apple lawsuit? Build a horrible device

Among the requests were phones and tablets that weren’t shaped like rectangles and/or rounded on the corners, screens that aren’t centered on the front of the device, thick bezels and frames and “profiles that aren’t thin”. Yup, Apple is demanding that Samsung not make thin tablet,s an especially funny sentiment when you consider that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is already thinner than the iPad 2.

Other suggestions include a “cluttered appearance”, non-horizontal speakers, or a complete absence of bezel. The latter is basically impossible, while the former are just ridiculous. In short, Apple wants Samsung to make and sell a phone/tablet that’s triangular, three inches thick, covered in stickers, with a huge frame and an off-center screen. That’s all.

e3eceeac6f40x303.png What does it take to stop an Apple lawsuit? Build a horrible device

It’s pretty apparent that Apple doesn’t intend to let Samsung continue its business at all if they can help it. After the late Steve Jobs’ mouth-frothing damnation of all things Android and the company’s refusal to settle the Australian court case shows that there’s just no dealing with Cupertino when they feel they’ve been copied – an interesting state of mind, considering Apple’s design history. (Enjoy your folders and notifications, iPhone users!) Though the Australian case is looking better for Samsung after the court ruled in its favor in an appeal, Apple still has time to try and overturn the decision. Apple has already filed suit against Samsung in Germany for the Galaxy Tab 10.1N, the device that was built to placate their original patent case.

But that’s alright. The minute that Samsung releases the Galaxy Brick, I’m sure Apple will withdraw its complaints.

Samsung shows off how great their Galaxy S II line really is

Right before our near future of shopping madness, you can bet we’ll be seeing some great new commercials. Samsung just dropped one showing off how waiting for the “right” phone to get here just doesn’t make sense when the Galaxy S II is already here. It’s quite comical, but even more amusing is the fact that this could very well happen.

bfeab74b78uTube2.jpg Samsung shows off how great their Galaxy S II line really is

This clip shows some Apple fans waiting in line to purchase what seems to be the iPhone 4S. But as they wait, they notice something. One guy in line says, “Whoa, whats she got there”, of course referring to the Samsung Galaxy S II. Galaxy S II owners then show off the device’s bigger more vibrant screen, 4G capabilities, and simply its overall amazingness. Yeah, this is certainly a bias commercial, but then again all commercials are.

It makes me wonder if we could compare this to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. We are all waiting for this amazing device to finally become available, but are we really just waiting on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)? Once the current Galaxy S II smartphones are finally updated to ICS, could they still triumph over the Galaxy Nexus? Benchmarks of the Galaxy Nexus show that it just barely beats the GSII; only when they both sport ICS will we finally realize the next big thing was just Android 4.0.

There will surely be more commercials like this as we near the Christmas holiday shopping season. Hopefully they are all this clever.

Galaxy Nexus 1080p video and photo samples

Today we’ve finally been given a chance to take a more in-depth look at the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus hero phone from Google. You’ve probably seen hands-on and videos appearing all over the place and we have plenty of our own. I’ll link to our coverage below but this post is all about that amazing camera. Yes it’s only 5 megapixels but Google and Samsung are touting it to be the best yet. We tested some 1080p video and snapped a few photos so check em out.

First I’ll let you dive into our Gnex hands-on and unboxing, then you can enjoy a quick look at our Ice Cream Sandwich hands-on part 2. That will give you a better idea of what to expect, especially if you’ve not dug around the SDK yet. Below we have included a quick 1080p video sample recorded with the Galaxy Nexus. You can see how well it really does, even in low light. We recorded part of the Google Music event yesterday and it still looks quite impressive for the extremely low amount of light that was available, not to mention all those dark heads in our way. Zoom was a bit choppy as you can see but I’ll let you decide yourself.

Galaxy Nexus 1080p video sample

Also, just for a comparison we’ve tested the Galaxy Nexus shutter speed compared to the iPhone 4S as I’m sure a few would like to see how it compares. Apple made a big deal about that 8MP camera so here is that video below — obviously the Nexus was much much faster:

Now below is a small gallery of full size HD photos taken with the Galaxy Nexus, they’ve been re-sized to around 1000 for uploading here but you get the idea. That panoramic shot is awesome and we’ve snapped a few more of those and will be sure to share soon. Obviously we’ll have much more of the Galaxy Nexus coming very very soon so stay tuned for more details and our full review once we get through all the awesome new features.

HTC tablet packing Tegra 3 rumored for February 2012

We all know that the Tegra 3 quad-core chip for tablets is coming and will be the chipset that most high-end Android tablets use. A new rumor is swirling around that says HTC is getting a tablet ready for launch in February 2012 that uses the Tegra 3 hardware. The rumors also claim that HTC has two new smartphones coming in the same time period.

320a70587540x360.jpg HTC tablet packing Tegra 3 rumored for February 2012

The launch of the tablet is pegged for MWC 2012. The tip comes from Chinese paper Commercial Times and the paper claims that this will be the only Android tablet we see from HTC in 2012. The goal is said to be getting the new Tegra 3 chipset onto the market ahead of the widely expected Q3 launch of Windows 8 tablets.

HTC will offer up its own Windows tablets said to be using the ARM build of the Win 8 OS. I think that a bunch of smartphone fans out there will be much more interested in the smartphone that is tipped to be coming using the Tegra 3 chipset. The little beast is said to have a 4.7-inch screen with a super high pixel density greater than that of the iPhone 4S.

HTC Thunderbolt getting official MIUI support, download the ROM now

The iPhone-aping MIUI family of custom Android ROMs is gaining a lot of support lately, and not just for that pretty interface. The latest device to get the official nod from the MIUI team is the HTC Thunderbolt, after the patient and dutiful efforts of the independent developers. The Thunderbolt won’t be added to the MIUI tree for a while, but you can download the latest feature-complete version from RootzWiki now.

bf878e9c9042x540.jpg HTC Thunderbolt getting official MIUI support, download the ROM now

For the uninitiated, MIUI is a community-created ROM that runs on a variety of Android phones, with a homescreen and color scheme that should be familiar to those with a hankering for iDevices. Phones like the Samsung Galaxy S II, Optimus 2X and DROID Incredible are officially supported. New and improved versions of the ROM are posted each and every Friday, making MIUI a popular choice for those who have to be on the bleeding edge. Full theme support and a variety of Gingerbread customizations are present.

While the latest version of the (currently) unofficial Thunderbolt port is far from perfect, all the important bits are there, including access to Verizon’s 4G LTE. MMS is still non-functional, though that’s being actively pursued by lead dev “DroidVicious”. Some users are still reporting some battery issues and trouble getting a GPS fix. Try it out on your rooted Thunderbolt, but remember: Nandroid backups are your friends.

Android beating iPhone by more than two to one in the UK

Brits like their Android. In the United Kingdom, Android phones are outselling the iPhone by a factor of two to one, according to analytical firm Kantar Worldpanel Comtech. Android phones outsold all iPhone models for July, August and September. Smartphones themselves are booming in The UK, with 70% of all mobile sales being smartphones of one kind or another.

36d97f0bb640x317.jpg Android beating iPhone by more than two to one in the UK

49.9 percent of all the smartphones sold in the territory over the 12 week period were running Android, compared to just an 18.5 percent share for the iPhone. The Blackberry platform hasn’t fallen from grace so dramatically in the UK, and has 22.5 percent of the market. According to Kantar Worldpanel Comtech’s estimate, 43.8 percent of the UK population owns a smartphone, meaning that almost a full quarter of the population owns an Android phone.

Caveats: this data doesn’t include the iPhone 4S, which will certainly spike the numbers in iOS’s favor for a few weeks. It also doesn’t represent an accurate picture of the mobile OS market as a whole ,as it doesn’t include iPods or iPads, or the small number of Android tablets out there. Apple is still kicking backside when it comes to mobile browsing – Safari has captured an impressive 62.2% of all mobile browsing, incorporating all iPhone, iPod and iPad models in the UK and elsewhere. Also, Android manufacturers typically report in terms of units shipped, not sold – Apple has an advantage there since a lot of their sales are direct to consumers.

Still, any way you slice it, Android is continuing to dominate in the smartphone arena. Here’s hoping that Ice Cream Sandwich will continue the trend when the Galaxy Nexus lands at the White Cliffs of Dover on November 17th.
