Amazon Kindle Fire gets an Ice Cream Sandwich alpha port

More than a few of you are probably running brand new Kindle Fire tablets through the ringer right now, as it’s been one of the most popular electronics gifts of the season. But the default Amazon interface isn’t really anything to write home about – the Gingerbread-based version of Android is primarily designed to access Amazon’s content, with a few apps and web browsing on the side. If you’re handy with a bootloader, you can try out an early version of Ice Cream Sandwich on your shiny new 7-inch tablet, courtesy of “bl1nkk” and company at XDA-Developers.

Before you break out your USB cable, remember that this is a pre-alpha build. That means that performance will be well below what you see in tablets that run Honeycomb at retail, and a lot of features including the horizontal launcher, proper partition mounting and a few others aren’t fully baked. But for the Kindle Fire owner with decent technical skills and no fear, it’s hard to argue with a $ 199 Android 4.0 tablet. If you want to try out a more stable version, CyanogenMod 7/Gingerbread (as opposed to CyanogenMod 9) is available for the Fire.

In order to apply the ICS ROM you’ll need to use a tool called the Team Win Recovery Project. It’s an alternative recovery like the familiar ClockworkMod, but the more popular one apparently hasn’t made it to the highly customized Amazon tablet just yet. Once you’ve got your recovery ready, just flash the ROM file from XDA, as well as the ICS version of the Google Apps ZIP (Gmail, Android Market, etc) and the root files, if you wish. Remember to always back up, and don’t cry to Uncle Harold if your tinkering messes up your new toy.

CrackBerry Asks: Did you buy Angry Birds for the BlackBerry PlayBook?

8c050b2f1bBirds.png CrackBerry Asks: Did you buy Angry Birds for the BlackBerry PlayBook? Did you buy Angry Birds for the BlackBerry PlayBook?

While it hasn’t even been a week since hitting the BlackBerry PlayBook, Angry Birds HD, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio are all sitting on top of the Top Paid apps in BlackBerry App World. It’s no surprise really, as everyone loves angry birds (well, pretty much everyone anyway). I grabbed Angry Birds HD for my PlayBook and spent a good amount of my weekend taking down those little green pigs. No matter how many times on how many platforms I play, I still love rocking it out not matter what version it may be. So we’re just curious to know how many of you picked up Angry Birds (HD, Rio or Seasons) for your PlayBook. Pick up the option above that best fits you, then drop a comment letting us know why you did or didn’t grab Angry Birds for the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Samsung’s dual SIM kick continues with the Galaxy S II Duos

Just yesterday we got our fist look at the Galaxy Y Duos and the Galaxy Y Pro Duos, Samsung’s latest low-cost mobiles designed for users who need an extra SIM card in their phone. Today Sammy Hub reports on the first details of a more up-market version, based on the ever-popular Galaxy S II platform. The I-929 Galaxy S II Duos mirrors the older models in almost every way, though it appears that there’s a little extra junk in the trunk to accommodate dual SIM card slots.

Android Community App of the Week: Android 4.0 web browser

In my tenure here at Android Community, I haven’t been shy about my love for Dolphin Browser HD. It’s one of those apps that I immediately download on every phone and tablet I review, simply because I’ve grown to depend on its features and expandability. But after a week with the Galaxy Nexus and Ice Cream Sandwich, I’ve found to my amazement that I just don’t need it any more. The default browser that comes with Android 4.0 incorporates all of the features that made Dolphin a must-have, and it’s faster and more stable to boot.

b2150380d840x303.png Android Community App of the Week: Android 4.0 web browser

There are two primary advantages to Dolphin that kept me coming back: built-in fullscreen support and a quick desktop mode (via the add-on Desktop Toggle). Both of these features can be found within the ICS browser’s settings menu, and unlike Honeycomb, fullscreen browsing doesn’t require the somewhat awkward quick controls. Syncing bookmarks from your desktop Chrome browser is easier than any other implementation, including Dolphin, Firefox and Opera Mobile. Maybe that’s cheating somewhat, since Android is Google’s software through and through, but at the end of the day it’s a very welcome addition.

The browser interface has received a major overhaul as well, shrinking Honeycomb’s features down to smartphone size. Instead of a horizontal bar, tabs are kept in a WebOS-style stack, similar to the app switch button in the virtual navigation bar. Switching is fast and intuitive, and quickly closing multiple apps is simple thanks to the swipe motion. To see a desktop version of any site, simply tap the menu button in the address bar and then tap “request desktop site”. You can even save entire pages for viewing later. Browser performance is noticeably speedier than previous Android versions, both in load times and navigation.

Maybe it isn’t fair to highlight an app that’s included in Android, and won’t be accessible to most users for months. But trust me: the Ice Cream Sandwich browser will be worth the wait. It’s still a little light on expandability, which is where third-party browsers will have it beat with extensions, plugins and themes. But even power users can depend upon the built-in ICS browser for just about everything you’d want from the mobile web, a statement that simply isn’t true for Gingerbread. Hopefully  Ice Cream Sandwich will find its way onto more phones soon, and if it doesn’t, it’s worth trying an Android 4.0 ROM if you’ve got the inclination.

ASUS Transformer Prime is in stock at Best Buy online now

The ASUS Transformer Prime seems to be available for shipping now! Over at Wireless Goodness, a screenshot was taken of their webpage showing the item was available for free delivery. The fine print even stated it “Usually leaves our warehouse in 1 business day”. This would essentially mean a possible December 27th delivery.

The only version of the device available is gray and has a 32GB internal storage. Hurry and order here before this much sought after item sells out! The accessories are currently unavailable, but keep an eye out as they may be soon. With Christmas right around the corner, I wouldn’t be surprised if Best Buy backorders from the overwhelming amount of purchases.

Included in the box, is the ASUS Transformer Prime with 32GB internal storage, its lithium-polymer batter, an AC adapter, power cord, and owner’s manual. It’s too bad a bundle with the keyboard dock isn’t available, as that is what really sets this tablet apart from the rest. The tablet will ship with Android 3.2 Honeycomb and ASUS confirmed an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich soon. Those of you have haven’t seen it – check out our review of the device here!

Dell partners with Chinese search engine Baidu for Streak Pro

Dell’s American Android ambitions may have soured after lackluster sales of the Streak 5 and Streak 7 tablets, but it’s more than willing to take advantage of the rapidly expanding Chinese market. Since Google’s ubiquitous presence isn’t nearly as ubiquitous across the Pacific, it’s partnering with search engine Baidu to deliver services to their latest creation, the Streak Pro. The phone will use the Baidu Yi platform, a fork of Gingerbread’s open-source code that remains compatible with Android apps. Dell has effectively ended its Android products in America after it stopped selling the Streak 7 tablet through T-Mobile earlier this month.

3cc38504b540x317.jpg Dell partners with Chinese search engine Baidu for Streak Pro

Dell is the first company to produce a Yi phone, though they’ve released more subtly modified Android phones in the territory in the past. And just because it’s releasing to a traditionally low-income market doesn’t mean it won’t be impressive: the Streak Pro is aiming for the growing high end with a 1.5Ghz dual-core processor, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen and qHD resolution. That’s enough to match most of the flagship phones in the US and Europe, and considerably more powerful than any ARM-based Dell products produced before.

Baidu apps are already commonplace on many Chinese Android smartphones, and the Yi platform will be an even greater integration with the company’s far-reaching services. It’s unclear how closely Yi will follow Android’s development path – they could simply update the modified Android code incrementally, as Barnes & Noble has done with its Nook tablets, or continue with independence development on their own. The latter seems unlikely, as apps published for Android would become increasingly nonfunctional the further that Yi’s code strays away from Android’s source.
